Permanent Christmas light installation on a typical DFW home takes one day, sometimes two for large or multi-story homes. A crew measures and stages the track, screws it into the fascia, routes low-voltage cable out of sight, mounts the controller near an outlet, tests every light and walks you through the app before leaving.
If you have decided permanent Christmas lights are right for your home, the next questions are practical. How long does installation take? What happens on install day? Will it damage your fascia? What should you do to prepare? This guide walks through the process from consultation to the final app walkthrough, so you know what to expect.
What Gets Installed and Where
Permanent Christmas lighting is a track of LEDs, usually full color plus warm white, mounted along the front edge of your roofline. The track is typically aluminum and color-matched to your fascia or soffit so it blends in during the day.
Most DFW homeowners start with the street-facing rooflines. Others add the sides and back, detached garages, second-story rooflines or gable peaks. The design is up to you and your budget.
The controller mounts in the garage or another protected spot and usually plugs into a standard outlet. You control the system from a phone app, so no new wall switch is needed.
Step 1: The Consultation
Installation starts with a site visit. A good installer will:
- Walk the perimeter and measure the linear footage you want lit
- Check fascia and soffit condition for soft spots or rot
- Identify power access and where the controller will go
- Talk through which elevations, peaks and features to include
- Ask about HOA requirements, since some neighborhoods regulate track color or require architectural approval
You should receive an itemized quote that breaks out materials, labor, the control system and any extras. Take your time deciding. Be cautious of anyone pushing you to sign the same day.

Step 2: Scheduling
Installs happen year-round, but demand spikes from September through early December as homeowners try to be lit before the holidays. In the fall, calendars fill quickly, so book as early as you can. Spring and summer are much easier to schedule.
Weather can move your date. Installers generally avoid working in rain, high wind or freezing conditions, since ladder safety and proper sealing depend on dry, mild weather. In a North Texas winter, that can mean a short delay.
Step 3: Install Day, Hour by Hour
Every crew works a little differently, but a typical install day for a mid-size home might look like this:
Morning arrival. The crew arrives, walks the house with you and confirms the scope: which rooflines, where the controller goes and which outlet it will use.
Staging. Track is measured, cut to length and laid out on the ground. Ladders or lifts are set. If a small hole is needed to pass low-voltage cable into the garage, the crew should show you the location and confirm before drilling.
Mounting. Track is fastened along the roofline with clips or screws into the fascia. Holes should be pre-drilled and sealed. LEDs are loaded into the track, and cable is routed and tucked along the soffit so it is hidden from the ground.
Power and testing. The controller and power supply are installed, the system is powered on and every light is tested. Lights are mapped into zones in the app, such as front roofline, garage and gables, so each section can be controlled separately.
Cleanup and walkthrough. The crew cleans up, then shows you how to choose scenes, set schedules and use holiday presets. You should leave with warranty paperwork and a way to reach the installer for support.
Will Installation Damage Your Roof or Fascia?
This is the most common question. Properly installed permanent lighting is usually gentler on a home than years of seasonal lights.
The track mounts to the fascia, the same board that supports your gutters, with small pre-drilled and sealed fasteners. It does not go through your shingles. If the system is ever removed, the holes can be filled and painted.
Compare that with seasonal lighting: staples, adhesive hooks and clips attached to shingles and gutters every year, then pulled down every January.
A responsible installer will not mount track on rotted or soft fascia. If damage is found during the consultation, it should be repaired first. And if your roof is near the end of its life, consider replacing it before installing lights. Prometheus also handles roof replacement, which makes it easier to plan both projects in the right order.
What Should Be in Your Quote
A complete quote typically includes:
- Track, LEDs, clips, connectors and cabling
- Controller, power supply and app setup
- Labor for the full installation
- Measurement and design
- Manufacturer and workmanship warranty terms in writing
- Optional add-ons, if requested, such as column wraps or extra zones
Often not included: electrical work beyond plugging into an existing outlet, such as adding a new circuit or exterior outlet, which is a separate job for a licensed electrician, and major fascia repair.
Typical Costs
In the DFW market, professionally installed systems commonly range from about $3,500 to $5,500 for smaller homes with front-only coverage, around $5,500 to $8,500 for mid-size homes with front and sides, and $8,000 to $11,500 or more for larger homes with full-perimeter coverage. Estates and complex rooflines can exceed $20,000. Steep, multi-story rooflines and homes with many peaks and dormers take more material and labor.
Questions to Ask Any Installer
- How long is the LED warranty, and how long is the track warranty?
- Is labor included for warranty repairs, and for how long?
- Are you certified by the manufacturer of the system you install?
- Who will be on my roof, and are they insured?
- Do you have a local office and verifiable reviews?
- What happens if I have a problem in year three?

Pre-Install Checklist for Homeowners
- Move vehicles out of the driveway and away from the front of the house for ladder access
- Trim branches that block the fascia along the install path
- Decide which outlet you want the controller to use, usually in the garage
- Get HOA approval in writing if your neighborhood requires it
- Download the app ahead of time and have your Wi-Fi password ready
- Secure pets and let the crew know about gates or side-yard access
After the Install
Your system is ready to use the same day. Most apps include presets for Christmas and other major holidays, warm-white scenes for everyday accent lighting and tools for building your own. You can schedule the lights to come on at sunset and turn off at bedtime.
If something goes wrong later, such as a dim section, a single dead light or an app issue, most problems are simple fixes like a controller reset or replacing one node. Know your warranty terms so you know what is covered.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does permanent Christmas light installation take?
Most DFW homes are installed in one day. Large homes, multi-story rooflines or full-perimeter designs may take two days. Design and material lead time before install day usually adds a few weeks.
Do permanent lights go through my roof shingles?
No. The track mounts to the fascia board along the roof edge with small sealed fasteners. It does not penetrate the shingles, and the holes can be filled and painted if the system is ever removed.
Do I need an electrician for permanent Christmas lights?
Usually not. Most systems plug into an existing outlet in the garage. If you need a new outlet or circuit, that work should be done by a licensed electrician.
Can permanent lights be installed in winter in DFW?
Yes, as long as the weather cooperates. Installers generally avoid rain, high wind and freezing conditions, so a cold or stormy stretch can push your date by a few days.
