Sizing: How Many kWh Do You Need?
Battery sizing should match your goals, not arbitrary recommendations.
Essential-loads backup (8-12 kWh): Refrigeration, lighting, communications, fans, select outlets. 12-24 hours of comfort during outages. Most common configuration in DFW.
Whole-home backup excluding AC (15-25 kWh): Everything except your central air conditioning. Useful for spring/fall outages but inadequate for summer outages.
Whole-home backup including AC (30+ kWh): AC is a significant load. Running it during outages requires substantial battery capacity. Realistic for affluent homes prioritizing comfort during summer outages.
Multi-day autonomy (40+ kWh with solar): Full energy independence. The battery + solar combination handles multi-day outages and reduces grid dependence dramatically.
For most DFW homes, 12-24 kWh is the sweet spot — meaningful backup capacity, reasonable cost, fits in most utility rooms or garages.
AC vs DC Coupled Systems
This is technical but matters for system performance and future expansion.
DC-coupled systems connect the battery directly to your solar array on the DC side, before the inverter. Single inverter handles both solar and battery. More efficient (less conversion loss), simpler architecture. Best for new installs or major retrofits.
AC-coupled systems use a separate battery inverter that connects on the AC side of your solar inverter. Slightly less efficient but simpler to retrofit to existing solar. Better for adding batteries to existing solar arrays without replacing the original inverter.
Either architecture works fine. Choose based on whether you’re new install or retrofit.

Battery warranties have two limits: cycle life and years. Whichever you hit first ends the warranty.
Cycle life is how many full charge/discharge cycles the battery is rated for. Modern LiFePO4 batteries typically warranty 6,000+ cycles at 70-80% retained capacity. For most residential applications, you’d hit the year limit before cycle limit.
Year limit is typically 10-15 years for residential batteries.
Capacity retention is also worth checking. Some warranties guarantee 70% retained capacity at end of warranty period; others guarantee less.
Other warranty considerations:
- Does the warranty cover labor for replacement, or just the battery?
- Who handles warranty claims — the installer or the manufacturer?
- What’s the response time for warranty issues?

Should You Bundle With Solar?
For new installations, bundling solar and battery typically delivers better economics than installing them separately. Reasons:

For existing solar owners, retrofitting battery storage works fine. It’s a smaller project (1-2 days typically), and most existing solar systems can accommodate AC-coupled battery retrofits regardless of original inverter brand.
